A Lesson On Sushi For Weight Loss

I LOVE Sushi, and I think everyone trying to lose weight should incorporate it into their diets.  Here are my reasons:

1) It’s DELICIOUS. Do you feel deprived?  With Sushi, you will never feel like you’re missing out.

2) It has VERY lean protein

3) Excellent source for Omega-3 fatty acids

4) Usually includes fresh vegetables and miso soup.

5) There are many varieties of sushi that will fit all taste preferences.  Very fishy, to no fish at all :)

Here are some important lessons on how to eat Sushi that will most benefit your waist line…

Are you a sushi virgin?  Do you cringe at the thought of chewing raw fish in your mouth?  No worries!  There are many types of sushi that don’t involve any raw fish at all.  You can have vegetable sushi rolls that are made out of only rice, seaweed wrap, and yummy veggies.  Or you can try a california roll that is made out of vegetables and imitation crab meat.  You can also get individual sushi pieces of “tamago” that are made of egg–go easy on these, however, since they do have some sugar.   If you do decide to try sushi with raw fish, try a simple roll like a spicy tuna roll.   If you’re not sure if you want to eat a whole roll, you can try a handroll–but be aware that handrolls usually have more fish / fillings per bite than a roll.  Here are some pictures:

Do you not like eating a lot of rice?  Perhaps you are following a low-carb diet, or you just find that you don’t enjoy the meal as much because you ate more rice than the ‘good stuff”.   If you are a hard-core sushi eater, try ordering Sashimi, which is straight up slices of fish and other seafood.  This will include NO rice at all.  If you like to control how much rice you eat, try ordering a Chirashi – which is sashimi laid out nicely on top of a bowl of sushi rice–so you can decide how much rice you want to eat.   Another option that many people do not know about are sushi rolls tht are wrapped in cucumber instead of rice!  These rolls have the veggies and fish as other sushi rolls do, but minus the rice!  VERY healthy.

What to watch out for: There are many varieties of sushi out there, so here are some types of sushi and add-ons that you want to definitely taste (bc they are SO AMAZINGLY delicious), but not go overboard on:

“Spicy” – this usually involves spicy sauce, which is partly made out of mayonaise.  I’ve seen people ask for extra spicy sauce on the side so that they can douse each of their sushi pieces in this stuff–it is very tasty, just don’t  overdo it.

“Crunch” – this means that the sushi has crunchy seasonings added to the roll–but the ‘crunch’ pieces are actually from deep fried tempera batter.   Once again, DELISH – but be sure to have other types of sushi too.

“Eel Sauce” – it’s very similar to terriyaki sauce, and includes a lot of sugar.  Go easy with this sauce.

“Tempura” – or “Sunday Morning Rolls” – these are rolls that either include shrimp or crab that are deep fried with tempura batter, or the WHOLE roll itself is covered in tempura batter and deep fried.  Sunday morning rolls are an example – usually made with rice, salmon, and cream cheese–and then covered in batter and fried.  Yummy, but fattening compared to other rolls.

“Soft Shell Crab” – To me, this is quite a delicacy.  However, it is prepared through frying, so if you are sensitive to oils – be aware of this.  But there shouldn’t be much to worry about since it is usually given in small proportions in any roll.

There you go–everything you need to know to be more health-conscious the next time you go eat Sushi.  It’s a cuisine that you will fully enjoy, and feel good about because of its health benefits!
